Careers at JustEnglish

We're people who work hard, like to have fun and genuinely give a sh*t about you.

Our goal is never to be a big company. It is to be a good one, a place where people do their best work together.

Our priorities are to take care of people, products, and profits, in that order. We haven't found a better way to run things.

Open roles

We hire slowly and intentionally. Here's what who we're looking for right now.

No open roles right now, but we'd still love to hear from you.

No match right now? Just email us what you want to do at JustEnglish — hello@justenglish.lk

JustEnglish exists because it makes no sense that English is still treated like a privilege in Sri Lanka. Some people move ahead in education, careers, and life, while others fall behind — not because they're less capable, but because of one thing: English.

We don't buy into that. We see English as just a skill, not a status thing. We're building this so more people can actually get it and move forward on their own terms.

Modus operandi

Guiding principles.

Not words on a wall. Click any to read more.

01
People over process
We support flexibility, boundaries, and sustainable ways of working. We look out for one another not because it's a policy, but because it's the right thing to do.
02
Care for the work
We take ownership and take pride. Steady improvement over performative busyness. We don't do things just to look busy.
03
Honest and direct
We say what we think, explain our reasoning, and commit together once a decision is made. We debate ideas, not people.
04
Mistakes are information
We don't do blame. We share what we learn, help each other grow, and treat setbacks as data, not failure.
05
Feedback and iteration
We ask for feedback. We give it with generosity and specificity. We iterate, learn, and keep going.
06
Inclusion and belonging
Everyone feels valued and heard. Diverse perspectives make the work stronger. We don't just say this, we practise it.
07
What we won't be
A place that tolerates disrespect, burnout, or shortcuts. That's not who we are and it's not where we're going.

What our team says

In their own words.

"I would describe JE as supercool, chill, people focused - not the type that just says they are people focused."

"Not being micromanaged, having a close team and especially putting people above work."

"I was actually able to experience open culture first at JE. Other places say it. JE actually does it."

"It feels like a place where ideas are welcomed and people are trusted."

"We know the company will take care of us as we take care of the company."

"JE genuinely cares about students - their future, their time, their effort."

A little note from us.

Hey, how's it going?

We started JustEnglish because of something we kept seeing. In Sri Lanka, when people try to speak in English, they get judged. Try, and you're called posh. Struggle, and you get laughed at. Either way, people hold back.

That felt wrong to us. So we built a space where people can practice anonymously, without judgment. Just real conversations, with real people.

We're still figuring things out and building as we go. But one thing hasn't changed. People come first. Our students, and our team.

If this feels like something you believe in, we'd love to hear from you :)

FAQ

Seems like you have some questions?

Before you apply, here’s what everyone asks :)

Will I actually have freedom to do my job?
Yes. We don't micromanage. You own your work and we trust you to get it done. That's the deal.
What does a typical week look like here?
Flexible, async-friendly, and focused. No pointless meetings. You do your work, we check in when needed, and everyone gets on with things.
How does hiring actually work?
We move slowly and carefully. Usually a conversation first, then a short task if relevant, then we decide together. No ghost rounds or panel interviews.
Do I need to be based in Colombo?
Nope. We're fully remote. We have team members spanning from the US to the UK and Sri Lanka. As long as you can do the work and communicate clearly, location doesn't matter. We meet a couple of times a year in person as a team for lunch, dinner and drinks when planned.
Can I talk to someone on the team before applying?
Absolutely. Drop us a line at hello@justenglish.lk and we'll set something up. We'd rather you ask questions upfront than waste each other's time.
